What Is the Kindle Paperwhite?
The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon's mid-range e-reader and, for most people, the one to buy. It has a 7-inch glare-free display with higher contrast and 25% faster page turns than the previous model, adjustable warm light, waterproofing, USB-C charging, and up to 12 weeks of battery per charge. This listing is the 16GB black model.
It's a perennial top holiday gift, and the data backs it: 4.6 out of 5 stars across 23,430 Amazon ratings as of October 10, 2026.
How We Picked This
This isn't a hands-on test writeup. We picked the Paperwhite because it's the e-reader most people should buy: the best balance of screen, waterproofing, and price, with a very large review base. The features below come from the manufacturer's published specs on the Amazon listing, and the rating data is Amazon's own aggregate verified-purchase data as of October 10, 2026.
We also looked at what the product does not do well, or what buyers need to know before ordering, and put that in the cons and FAQ rather than burying it. If the person reads from many stores or libraries beyond Amazon's, an open Android reader like the BOOX Palma 2 Pro is more flexible.
Key Features
Five features make the Paperwhite the default e-reader gift.
7-Inch Glare-Free Display
Amazon says the 2024 display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns than the previous Paperwhite, on a larger 7-inch screen that reads like paper even in sunlight.
Adjustable Warm Light
The light can shift from white to amber for comfortable reading in the dark.
Up to 12 Weeks of Battery
A single USB-C charge lasts up to 12 weeks, according to Amazon — essentially never a worry on trips.
Waterproof
It's designed to survive the pool, the bath, and the beach.
Distraction-Free Reading
No social media or notifications, just books — with access to the Kindle Store and optional Kindle Unlimited for all-you-can-read access to a large catalog.
